About

Our Story

In August of 2020, we came together to create a place for children in grades K-2 to log on to their virtual classrooms with their public school teacher but still have a real classroom environment with teachers, peers, hands on resources, and some in-person learning during this presumably difficult year.

As educators, we believed children in this age group required an in-person education in order to be successful so, in lieu of the pandemic, we opened our doors eagerly and excitedly.

What was supposed to be one marking period, it turned into a full year and the most amazing experience for both our students and teachers. Many students ended up unenrolling from their public school to be taught directly by our teachers in a homeschool pod. This evolution was the beginning of Richmond Primary's foundation as we began to realize we all wanted this environment for many more years to come. Our small class sizes of 6 allowed us to reach each child's needs directly and successfully and our students have been making enormous leaps in their academic progress and a deep desire for learning.

In February of 2021, we, along with a group of interested parents, began our search for a location that would be able to accommodate us and have the room for us to grow in size and offer this same small group education to other children in Richmond, VA.

By April, we were blessed to be connected with the staff at St. Matthew's Episcopal Church who were welcoming of our school and supportive of our mission.

By opening our doors as a private school we are able to stretch our arms to many more children in the primary grades who would benefit from small class sizes, directed teaching and a student-centered approach. We believe these primary years build the foundation to which they'll stand on the rest of their lives so it needs to be a strong one that is tailored to their individual needs.

We were blessed to be given this opportunity!

Our Future

Richmond Primary has experienced rapid growth in it's first 3 years, maxing out our current space. We are excited to be expending our program in a new location for the '25-'26 school year. This move will allow us to expand our grade levels with more classes while maintaining our mission of meeting each child where they are through small class sizes. Not only will more space enhance our programming and opportunities, but we believe we have found a partnership with a community that will provide us a rich future for many years to come. We cannot wait to share more with you this Fall!
